2018 Royal Tokaji Dry Furmint Vineyard Selection, Tokaj, Hungary

2018 Royal Tokaji Dry Furmint Vineyard Selection, Tokaj, Hungary

ABOUT THIS WINE

Summer was hot with temperatures often above 35℃, again accelerating maturation and the grapes ripened and were ready for picking earlier than ever before in the written history of Tokaji. An outstanding vintage with nice balance in the dries and unbelievable richness in the sweets. The winemakers started the grape harvest for the dry wines in August, an extraordinary three weeks earlier than the previous record, and they picked the last Furmint grapes for dry styles at the beginning of September, a date usually considered early for the start of the harvest for dry wines, let alone the finish.

Whole bunches were pressed and fermented in Zemplén oak barrels. After fermentation the winemakers matured the wine for six months in 300 litre and 500 litre barrels. The final blend has a proportion of 20% new oak.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Royal Tokaji Winery was founded in 1990 and has become one of the most admired wineries in Tokaj. Their goal is to revive and bring back to international acclaim the wines of one of history's most renowned wine regions.

The majority of Royal Tokaji’s vineyards are in the Mád commune. These include the First Growths – Szt. Tamás, Nyulászó, Betsek, and the Second Growth Birsalmás. Royal Tokaji’s Mézes Mály vineyard – a Great First Growth – lies within the Tarcal commune.

At the end of the 17th century, Tokaji aszú wines were so well regarded throughout the Courts of Europe that Prince Rákóczi insisted on a classification of the finest vineyards around the 28 villages in the region into: Great First Growths, First Growths, Second Growths and Third Growths.

For over 300 years this special terroir has benefited from Botrytis to produce world class wines.
