2023 Crous St Martin Gigondas “Les Espaliers”, Rhone Valley, France

2023 Crous St Martin Gigondas “Les Espaliers”, Rhone Valley, France

ABOUT THIS WINE

“Les Espaliers” is a classic Grenache-based blend, likely complemented by Syrah and Mourvèdre, sourced from high-altitude vineyards on the rocky terraces of Gigondas at the foot of the Dentelles de Montmirail. These sites feature stony, limestone-clay soils and benefit from exceptional sun exposure combined with cooling Mistral winds, producing grapes of intensity and balance.

In 2023, the vintage brought excellent conditions—moderate heat, cool nights, and a long ripening period—ideal for producing structured yet aromatic wines. The fruit is harvested manually, sorted rigorously, and fermented with native yeasts. Aging occurs in a mix of stainless steel and large, neutral oak vats, preserving purity while building depth and complexity.

“Les Espaliers” is a bold Rhône red that pairs effortlessly with dishes like lamb tagine, grilled duck breast, lentils with sausage, or rosemary-scented beef stew. Decant for an hour if drinking young to reveal its full aromatic and textural range.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Crous St Martin is a boutique Rhône Valley estate with vineyards spanning key crus such as Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The winery was created by a group of growers and winemakers committed to traditional farming methods, meticulous site selection, and low-intervention cellar work. Their focus is on terroir expression, often bottling by lieu-dit or terroir type to highlight microclimatic nuance.

Farming is sustainable, with many parcels in conversion to organic. Winemaking emphasizes minimal manipulation—indigenous yeast fermentations, gentle extraction, and aging in neutral vessels to let the fruit and soil character take center stage. “Les Espaliers,” named for trained vine rows or terraces, is a flagship Gigondas bottling that reflects their commitment to elegance, power, and place.
