ABOUT THE WINE

This 2023 Fleurie is crafted from old-vine Gamay planted on pink granite soils in the high-elevation lieu-dit of La Madone, one of the most iconic vineyard sites in Fleurie. The wine offers a vibrant aromatic profile—fresh-picked berries, rose petals, and crushed stones—supported by a palate that’s supple, fine-boned, and energetic. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts and whole-cluster fruit, followed by aging in used Burgundian barrels, allowing the wine's purity and terroir to shine without oak interference. Jean Foillard’s non-interventionist approach—organic farming, minimal sulfur, no fining or filtration—shows in the wine's precision and transparency. Ideal with roasted duck, mushroom dishes, or a simply grilled trout.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Jean and Agnès Foillard took over his father’s domaine in 1980. The biggest part of their vineyards are planted on the Côte du Py, the famed slope outside the town of Villié-Morgon. . These granite and schist soils sit on an alluvial fan at the highest point above the town and impart great complexity. Jean and three other local vignerons, Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet, and Guy Breton know as The Gang of Four, called for a return to the old practices of viticulture and vinification: starting with old vines, never using synthetic herbicides or pesticides, harvesting late, rigorously sorting to remove all but the healthiest grapes, adding minimal doses of sulfur dioxide or none at all, and refusing both chaptalization and filtration.
