NV Giuseppe & Luigi Prosecco, Friuli, Italy
ABOUT THIS WINE
The Glera for this wine comes from two parts: the largest part is in the Friuli sub-zone of Latisana, and the other is in the Collio DOC. Latisana is located southwest of Collio Orientale del Friuli and Collio is on the Slovenian boarder in the foothills. The farming is sustainable, with no use of pesticides or fungicides. Cover crops and mowing are used to maintain vineyard health. Soils are a fine mix of limestone and clay (marl), and they are dry farmed.
The Glera is hand picked, followed by soft pressing, static decantation, and temperature-controlled stainless steel fermentation. A secondary fermentation using the Charmat method occurs in pressurized tanks to capture primary aromatics, creating a crisp wine with a creamy mousse.
ABOUT THIS PRODUCER
Giuseppe and Luigi is one of the great, quality wineries in Northeast Italy. Ettore Anselmi first planted vines in 1937 after he bought his first hectare outside the town of Pocenia in the heart of sunny Friuli. The family owns 400 Ha of land, of which 90 are planted to vineyards. The remaining land is used to farm grains, apples and vegetables. The southern boundary of the farm is defined by the Stella River, which flows to the Adriatic and is part of a Natural Park. The gravel and sandy soils are a great home for the indigenous variety Pinot Grigio.
Today, brothers Giuseppe and Luigi Anselmi continue the family estate. They both studied enology at schools in Trentino, and have traveled to the Veneto and Tuscany to visit other quality wineries and learn new techniques. The local success of their wines has grown the estate to 80 hectares of vineyards. Each wine is produced with moderate yields, temperature controlled fermentation and no oak.
